Day 3, May 5, Portage to Chicago

I insisted on taking the cart all day, since Sue had done it yesterday. When you're on the cart, the effort of stopping to take a picture is, well, overwhelming. This is actually from Day 4.

Leaving the hotel was disorganized and confused. We did our best reviewing the original maps turn-by-turn, but key bridge construction delayed our exit significantly, as did a couple of injuries. Below, you can see Mark's arm, poked by a wire we didn't see on a kite.

The second injury was to the Luggage -- it had a tube go. Annie helped me replace the tire while Sue and Mark talked to Sue's mom. Sue wasn't done with the phone call when I was done with the tube. I LOVE her pump -- it's a Nashbar pump with CO2, has two separate nozzles. It cost $6.72 during the 72% off sale.

Not all our Nashbar purchases have worked out well. Three out of four panniers are going strong, but you figure that they can do better than 75% after 100 miles.

Back to the ride.

We wound our way from trail to trail sometimes using the original Plan, sometimes using the Garmin, and sometimes just asking around. We got to Chicago late in the day, tired, but happy. The Ramada did not have a free breakfast, and the cart is really heavy over any kind of hills -- especially man-made overpasses.

51 miles, 143 total.

A vague approximation of our route is below:
